The waiting is almost over as Derby Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol is to get under way this week.

From Friday, December 5, to Saturday, January 4, you can enjoy a vibrant new adaptation of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, which will be the big, spectacular festive production in the Main House.

Miserly old humbug Ebenezer Scrooge has no time for Christmas until one chilly December night he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley calls upon three spirits to guide Scroogeon a mysterious journey through Christmases past, present and future, revealing the error of his cold-hearted ways.

Along the way he encounters the mistletoe and merriment of Mr. Fezziwig’s dancing party, Tiny Tim’s generous spirit and the true consequences of his meanness and misery.

Neil Duffield’s faithful adaptation of a treasured novel retains all the magic and sparkle of this much-loved festive story. Made at Derby Theatre and performed by a professional talented ensemble cast, the show will feature a host of rousing Christmas carols and will be a heart-warming experience for all the family.

Playing the central role of the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge will be Jim Barclay, who has a wealth of stage and TV credits to his name including being a member of the National Theatre Company for three years and, in other theatres, starring in productions of Yes, Prime Minister, King Lear and Treasure Island.

Avid watchers of children’s TV in the late 80s and early 90s will recognise Jim from playing the children’s football team manager Jossy in two series of Jossy’s Giants and Ben Morgan in the phenomenally popular Grange Hill, both for the BBC. He has also appeared in The Young Ones.

The show is recommended for those aged seven and over. Tickets are £11-£24. Call the box office on 01332 593939.

Derby Theatre artistic director Sarah Brigham is also the director of A Christmas Carol, and said: “I am thrilled with the wonderful cast we have assembled for our big festive production for this year plus the

incredibly talented creative team we have on board.

“We will provide audiences of all ages with a fresh, yet faithful, big, bold and magical version of Dickens’ classic tale. Expect a festive theatrical experience suitable for the whole family, traditional carols, original Christmas music, spectacular ghostly goings-on, the adorable Cratchitt family, including Tiny Tim, and, of course, the iconic Scrooge. I am also delighted that a young company of local young people will be joining the ensemble company.”
