Crowds packed Wirksworth and Idridgehay railway stations as the first train to travel the Ecclesbourne Valley line in over 60 years hit the ground running.
Over 1,000 visitors passed through the stations on the opening day alone, and organisers were overjoyed by the success.

Martin Miller from Ecclesbourne Valley Railway said: "It was such a splendid day, with everything working beautifully.

"It was reminiscent of the Victorian opening, with the sun shining and the whole of Idridgehay there to wave the Ecclesbourne Express off.

"They really enjoyed the wonderful real-life theatre of the day."

Vintage railcar Iris transported visitors along the three-and-a-half mile stretch of restored track.

The event was attended by civic leaders including West Derbyshire MP Patrick McLoughlin who praised the

volunteers for their dedication.

The opening was the culmination of seven years of campaigning and hard work from a group of local rail enthusiasts.

The Ecclesbourne Valley line will be open most weekends, and on occasional weekdays for special events.

It's somewhat disappointing that the headline story on the Wirksworth page remains the EVR's extension to Idridgehay, a whole month after this happened! Surely there are newsworthy items in the Wirksworth area that should be coming to the fore, especially considering that the EVR's extension was well published at the time and is no longer a 'current' news story, an observation which even the EVR management would have to agree with, given their very forward looking agenda.
