BOMB squad officers were called to Wirksworth after a walker reported they had found an unexploded bomb on Saturday.
The walker discovered the 25lb shell at Wash Green and phoned the police.

A police spokeswoman said: "We went up to check it out and called in the bomb squad.

"It looked old. The bomb squad said it was a shell dating back to World War Two.

"It had been fired so wasn't that dangerous, but it still had gunpowder residue inside."

The bomb was in the middle of the field and posed no danger to houses, she said.

It was 10 inches long, and four inches in diameter, she added.

Bomb squad officers removed the shell from the field.
