Campaigners will be fighting to ban plastic bags on Saturday in Wirksworth.
Members of Sustainable Wirksworth have been gathering support and encouraging shoppers to use reusable bags.

A canvas alternative will be available from crusaders on the streets and from Ken’s Supermarket.

Sustainable Wirksworth member, Liz Ormond, said, “There are quite a lot of people who seem to be using reusable bags now and there are a lot available.

“We hope this we make more people think before they pick up plastic bags.”

The bags bear the logo of group and will, it is hoped, help promote local trade. The reusable bags cost £1.

Wirksworth councillor, Mike Ratcliffe said, “I know it’s hard to do without them but we have to make the effort. They’re a scourge to the environment we live in.

“They don’t biodegrade but end up contaminating the soil and watercourses, and eventually end up in the food chains.

“It really is time to tackle the problem.”

Bless Mrs Ormond, bless her to high heaven !

As soon as the government stops procrastinating and brings in charging for carrier bags, the better.

It's great that there are some people around here who are using sensible actions rather than apathy to make a difference, its not difficult and common sense after all ...

Well done Mrs Ormond, you chuffing legend :) :) :)
