Tributes paid to Wirksworth crash victim

A TOWN has paid tribute to an elderly pedestrian who died after being hit by a Land Rover in Wirksworth.
Mary Allsopp, 96, of Greenhill, died following the accident which happened at around 11am last Thursday on Dale End beside the Market Place.

Residents left flowers at the scene along with messages of condolence.

Canon David Truby, rector of Wirksworth Team Ministry, said residents were remembering Miss Allsopp and her family in their prayers.

He added: "One of our congregation was a very great friend of hers.

"I just felt how sad it was for someone to get to the age of 96 and to die so tragically.

"We are remembering all the family in our prayers."

Miss Allsopp had been a member of St Mary's Church in her younger days.

Fire crews from Matlock, Wirksworth and Kingsway in Derby freed Miss Allsopp from beneath the four-by-four but she died at the scene.

District, county and town councillor for Wirksworth, Irene Ratcliffe said: "It is a real tragedy for the town.

"It is very, very sad. My heart goes out to her family."

Insp Dave Richardson, of Derbyshire Police's South Road Policing Unit, said they were investigating the incident.

Chesterfield coroners said an inquest in to Miss Allsopp's death was set to be opened this afternoon.

A 54-year-old-man from Wirksworth, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care.

He has been interviewed and bailed.
