Anniversary gig at Belper venue

The Queens Head in Belper is celebrating its 25th birthday with a gig there on Friday, January 23.

A quarter of a century ago, The Queens Head on Chesterfield Road, threw open its doors to a thirsty clientele for the very first time - except that this is not strictly true. In its previous incarnations, the building had combined its social function with a butcher’s shop and private housing.

However, the pub as we know it dates back to January 1990.

One of Derbyshire’s haunted pubs, echoes of its past still manifest themselves from time to time although there is nothing remotely shadowy about the pub’s reputation for the quality of its ales and as a leading Amber Valley music venue.

Over the years, the greats of the UK and American folk and blues scene have graced the stage of the top bar and continue to do so. The likes of Martin Carthy and John Renbourn have left their mark along with a notably diverse range of artists. Where else would you expect to see a Scottish harpist, past and present members of Fairport Convention and punk legends such as Steve Ignorant?

Now, to commemorate a significant birthday, Kelly’s Heroes play the top bar on Friday for an admission fee of £2.50, what you might have paid way back in the 1990s.
