Busy half-term in store at Quad

QUAD in Derby is joining the national celebration of family-friendly events to enjoy as a family this month as part of the Family Arts Festival.

Taking place until November 2 to coincide with autumn half term dates across the country, QUAD is one of the Derby venues getting involved, and will be offering two family-friendly workshops themed around the venues Supernatural Season.

Capturing the Supernatural: Halloween Photography is a chance to work with a photo artist to create spooky phantoms, ghosts, ghouls, witches, monsters and all things spooky using photography tricks and effects.

Why not come along in your Halloween costumes? Capturing the Supernatural: Halloween Photography takes place on Friday, October 31, from 1pm until 4.30pm, and is suitable for children aged three and above. The cost is £10 per family and booking is recommended.

Build Your Own Mummy Doll is an artist-led craft workshop for the whole family to build your own mummified doll. Stitch together your ‘Mummy’ from scratch and customise its entire look to create a spooky doll to take away.

Build Your Own Mummy Doll workshop takes place on Saturday, November 1, from 1pm to 3.30pm and is suitable for ages ten and above. There will be activities for younger family members. The cost is £5 per doll and booking is recommended.

In QUAD cinemas over half-term, The Boxtrolls will be screening daily for Cine Kids. Boxtrolls is about a young orphan boy, raised by underground rubbish collectors, has to save his adopted family when threatened by an evil exterminator.

Cine Kids screenings are family-friendly films showing daily during school holidays. All tickets are £3.50 for Cine Kids Club members, Cine Kids family membership is available at QUAD box office for a one-off fee of £12. The Boxtrolls (certificate U) screens from Saturday, October 24 to Friday, October 31. Please check the QUAD website for details of screening times.

Alongside the Family Festival half-term events, QUAD has some regular activities that occur on a weekly basis.

Lego Saturday is free and takes place in QUAD every Saturday from 11am until 4pm in the Family Friendly Resource area just outside QUAD Gallery. Lego Saturday is a chance for children aged three and above (and grown-ups!) to come and have a play with Lego, all children should be accompanied.

Listen Love Learn is a programme of creative activities for families with children up to five years which offers a supportive environment to learn new skills and share experiences with focused sessions for young parents, babies, toddlers, mums, dads and families together. takes place every Tuesday in QUAD from 12noon. For specific ages, there are also digital October Half term activities. KidsQUAD, Creative arts activities for children aged 7-11 years offers a chance to join artists to create your own surreal and spooky animations. KidsQUAD: Spooky animations takes place on Monday, October 27, and Tuesday, October 28, from 10.30am until 12,30pm. The cost is £24 for both sessions and booking is advised.

DigisQUAD, Digital arts activities for young people aged twelve to sixteen years, returns with its popular Manga/Anime digital drawing workshop.

Artist Katy Coope will help you create your own spooky or spirit character in the Manga style. DigisQUAD: Manga! Takes place on Wednesday, October 29 and Thursday, October 30, from 1.30pm until 4pm. The cost is £29 for both sessions and booking is advised. KidsQUAD and DigisQUAD as places are limited, and children can be left unaccompanied during sessions. Children with additional support needs should come with care support.
