Cool time is in store this year

It’s back! This year’s Derby Christmas Ice Rink is open and will be situated in the Market Place until Monday, January 5.

Organisers of this year’s Derby Christmas Ice Rink, Showplace Events and Derby LIVE, have been hard at work with preparations for the festive activities in the Cathedral Quarter’s Market Place this winter.

The rink, made of real ice, is already up and running and will be open until the first week of 2015 (closing for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day).

East Midlands radio station GEM106 will be the proud media sponsors once again, with Gem Stars and Sammy the Hamster making appearances on selected days to interact with skaters. Skaters will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the GEM 106 team and be in with a chance to win free skate sessions through competitions and giveaways at the rink and on air.

Organisers have also launched a new event for this year. GEM106 Themed Thursdays will take place from 5pm on the evenings of December 4, 11 and 18. Prizes are up grabs for best dressed on the night.

Confirmed themes will be announced via www.derbyicerink.co.ukand www.derbylive.co.uk

Also new for 2014 is the Ice Rink café. The cafe will be open for business throughout the rink opening hours. A variety of hot drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Alternatively if skaters are looking for somewhere to eat nearby after their session on the ice then they can take advantage of the Nando’s Skate and Dine offer – Skaters need to keep hold of their iceskating ticket and present it at the Market Place restaurant to receive 20 per cent discount off their meal.

For those skaters who can’t skate or aren’t very confident yet, ice skating lessons are available.

Led by an experienced skater who works at the rink, each lesson lasts approximately 40 minutes and can be done as a private lesson or up to a group of three people.

The Christmas Arts & Craft fair will be returning to the Market Place alongside the ice rink, showcasing a range of independent crafters selling unique creations, perfect for those Christmas gifts and treats for friends and family.

A photography service will once again be operating, with photographers on hand capturing visitor’s experiences and allowing the option to purchase a keepsake of the festive day-out to treasure.
