Country Park hosts Steampunk event

A brass band, have a go archery, a facial hair competition and tea duelling will be part of Bestwood Country Park’s first ever Steampunk picnic, on September 5.

Steampunk is a genre where men and women enjoy the formalities and dress of the Victorian era, as well as the imaginative technology of steam driven gadgets.

Event organiser and Steampunk devotee Laura Simpson said: “We are extremely excited to host our first ever Steampunk-themed event at Bestwood Winding Engine House and Dynamo House.”

The event runs from 1pm-4pm.

Kirkby Colliery Brass Band will be taking part and people will have a chance to make their own fob watch and Steampunk mask.

The vintage café will see waitresses dressed in Lyons Nippy uniforms and volunteers will lead a number of Winding Engine House tours.

Laura commented: “By organising this type of new, unusual and innovative Steampunk event, we hope to mix heritage with new audiences so they too can appreciate our fascinating heritage in the present and the future. Heritage provides a major source of community cohesion and local identity, health and well-being and education - not to mention the huge economic benefits that these sorts of events provide.”

Entry to the event is free but some activities may charge.

Laura added: “We’re encouraging people to bring a picnic and blanket and join in the fun. For those who haven’t experienced Steampunk before they will hopefully find the day culturally uplifting.”
