FRINGE: Local landmarks and their legends

From Boggarts and Black Dogs to Mermaids and Missing Planes, the Peak District has a collection of fascinating legends.

Now a new exhibition as part of the Buxton Festival Fringe, entitled ‘Amazing Landmarks & Legends’, has opened in the Art Café at the Pavilion Gardens, and seeks to link some of the legends with the landmarks they are associated with.

Landmarks such as the Nine Ladies, a Bronze Age circle of dancers allegedly turned to stone; Lud’s Church where the Green Knight fought with Sir Gawain; the curse of Magpie Mine; the haunting of Winnats Pass; the Quiet Woman Inn featuring the headless wife of a publican and many more.

The exhibition features work by 25 members of High Peak Artists, including Rob Wilson, Sandra Orme, Louise Jannetta, Ingrid Karlsson Kemp, Jill Kerr and Kathy MacMillan, who have used paint, textiles, ceramics and jewellery to depict the landmarks. Write-ups of the legends appear alongside.

‘Amazing Landmarks & Legends’ will be on display until the end of August.
