Great start to Chesterfield Folk Club’s season in new venue

Rising star Tina Taylor opened the new Chesterfield Folk Club season at the Library Theatre. It was just what the club’s new venue and fresh approach needed.

Reflecting the club’s commitment to folk, blues, contemporary and acoustic music, Tina breezed through an immaculate set. With a rich blend of her own and other songs and tasteful guitar accompaniment, she charmed the audience.

Elbow Jane were back by popular demand, having last filled the club about 18 months ago. Their immaculate blend of tuneful songs, both self-penned and carefully chosen covers, provided a perfect evening. All the songs were carefully crafted and beautifully harmonised. Despite the strength of classics such as Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’ and Paul Simon’s ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’, their own songs stood up well by comparison.

The performance had echoes of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young both vocally and in social commentary and sensitive disposition. Literate lyrics and gentle good humour allowed them to explore feelings of loss, love and identity with the lightest of touches and an absence of any hectoring. A joy for all to behold. The crowd wouldn’t let them go and the concert duly overran.

The next concert on October 10 features the award-winning Sunjay Brayne. Another good night is in prospect.
