Principal cellist Nicholas Trygstad and violinist Sara Wolstenholme are to present Ravel’s masterful Duo for violin and cello, and the Kodaly Duo, during the second in the season of Spring Bank Arts’ popular Sunday Coffee Concerts on May 18.

The virtuosic pieces demonstrate the enormous range and colour that just two instrumentalists can produce.

The Kodály features many of the Magyar-inspired folk melodies from his native Hungary and is full of the dance rhythms of the same folk traditions.

Ravel’s duo is an exotic and colourful work composed in 1920 as a commemoration for Debussy.

Organiser and Hallé member, Dale Culliford, said of the venue: “It’s a very special hall to play in and a great opportunity to bring professional chamber music to the doorsteps of local people.”

As principal cellist of the Hallé Orchestra, Trygstad also finds time to perform as a concerto soloist and recitalist, as well as performing in many chamber groups including the Manchester Piano Trio and the Hallé Soloists Ensemble.

Wolstenholme divides her time between working with the Newcastle-based Royal Northern Sinfonia as principal first violinist, and performing as a soloist and guest leader of many ensembles and orchestras in the UK. She has a passion for chamber music and is the artistic director of the Beddgelert Festival in Snowdonia.

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 11.30am, are £12.50 and £11. Refreshments of coffee and home-made cakes are served from 11am and included in the ticket price.
