Hathersage Players to stage the comedy A Penny For a Song

At this time of commemorating the beginning of the 1914-18 conflict, Hathersage Players have chosen John Whiting’s play A Penny For A Song for their autumn production.

Although an English comedy it poignantly reminds us of the nonsense and cruelty of war, but is also wonderfully positive about basic goodness, love, and things that really matter, like Cricket and What Shall We Have For Lunch?

A Penny for a Song takes place on a summer’s day in 1804 in the garden of Sir Timothy Bellboy’s house in Dorset. An invasion by Napoleon is expected at any time and Timothy and his brother Lamprett have made preparations for that eventuality.
