MATLOCK: Tony’s art draws cashfor African adventure

Enterprising student Tony Elkington has put his art into fundraising for a mission to Africa where he will share his creative skills with young people.

Tony. 18, of Smedley Street, Matlock, will spend a month in Malawi helping out in summer camps, running workshops and using his creativity to engage with the young community, as well as working on projects to raise awareness of HIV/AIDs.

The trip has been arranged through Tearfund’s Creative Trips scheme and Tony is among a group of people from Britain supporting the Scripture Union Malawi initiative.

He said: “I am very excited. We are sheltered in Matlock and this will give me life experience of a different culture.

“I wanted to do something before I go off to Loughborough University to do product design.”

The Highfield Hall student leaves Matlock for Malawi in July on an adventure costing £2,000. He has raised some of the money working in the restaurant at the Heights of Abraham.

Tony boosted funds by putting his paintings and cards on sale at the Pavilion, Matlock Bath, over the bank holiday weekend as part of Derbyshire Open Arts.

Commenting on his exhibition, which included landscapes and planetary paintings, Tony said: “It reflects lots of different interests. My paintings start from photos and are then adapted from pictures in my head.”
