Opera, music and family shows on offer in Buxton this summer

The world renowned Buxton Festival returns to the town’s Opera House from July 10 to 26 with a mix of opera, talks from literary giants, conversationalists and politicians.

A jolly programme of operettas is lined up for August with The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company making a one-week visit with The Mikado, The Gondoliers and HMS Pinafore (August 4 to 8).

There’s lots of musical variety on offer.

On August 2 Mike Livesley and his band will recreate the late Viv Stanshall’s comedy masterpiece Sir Henry at Rawlinson End.

10cc will return on August 13, performing the album Sheet Music in full.

For those who like the hits of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, there’s Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular Show on August 15.

The Magnificent Music Hall on August 30 offers stars from BBC TV’s Good Old Days.

Grammy nominated Bluegrass star Clare Lynch will be visiting with her band from America on August 28.

Children can come face-to-face with a dinosaur on August 27 whenthe family show Jurassic Adventures transports audiences to a theme park with the use of a special climate system, for a heightened sensory experience.

Room on the Broom, the children’s storybook, comes to life on August 16 and 17, telling the tale of what happens when a cat, dog, bird and frog all try to fit on a witch’s broom.

After a sell-out show in February Sing-a-long-a-Frozen is back at the Opera House on August 10, with fancy dress and audience participation actively encouraged.

Comedy fans can look forward to Alan Carr’s new show Yap, Yap, Yap! – an extra date has been announced due to high demand (August 20 to 22).

For atmospheric drama, there’s Sherlock Holmes and The Ripper Murders telling the story of the killings in the smog-ridden slums of Victorian Whitechapel (August 24 and 25).

As well as enjoying some of the best touring theatre, Buxton drama lovers have the opportunity to watch plays at the National Theatre in London, without even leaving the town! NT Live, will be screening a new adaptation of Everyman, a 15th century morality play broadcast at Pavilion Arts Centre on August 8.
