Powerful wartime drama in Tideswell

A powerful piece of theatre set in the First World War is to be performed in the magnificent setting of Tideswell’s Cathedral of the Peak.

The Accrington Pals, written by Peter Whelan, will be performed by Tideswell Community Players in St John the Baptist Church from Wednesday May 28 to Friday May 30, each evening at 7.30pm.

The drama is a true life story about men who went away to fight and the close-knit village they left behind. Though set in Lancashire, the tale is relevant to any community that sent its young men off to the war 100 years ago. A sobering play with tragedy, it is also funny and moving.

Gerard Rogers, from Tideswell Community Players, said: “It commemorates the price a small community had to pay, but is in no way glorified, and is as meaningful today as it ever was, especially in this centenary year.”

The production is by the same theatre group which performed the sell-out Stirrings in Sheffield on Saturday Night last autumn.
