Review: Sukkerpunch at Real Time Live, Chesterfield

FORMED from the resting ashes of Traitor’s Gate talented Chesterfield fivesome Sukkerpunch are the latest gang to fly the flag as they opened up their short supporting set at Real Time Live with Freakshow, Void and She’s Got Something, which never has a truer phrase been said as these boys know their stuff.

Original songs are hard to get across to the paying masses, especially on the local circuit as most like to hear familiar tunes. And although this wouldn’t be a bad thing if Sukkerpunch did insert the odd one here and there, they deliver their own set of foot stompers with absolute conviction.

The sound delivered was also reasonably clear with a lovely bass driven groove, thanks to four stringer Dave Hewitt and sticksman Kirk Wells who both kept the ship on a firm even keel. Both guitarists Phil May and Paddy Watters effortless flicked out the riffs with frontman Pod barking out the words like his life depended on it.

As the set was short due to supporting Rammstein tribute stars Rammlied they ended with new tune For You plus a huge cheer from the Real Time crowd.

This was the second viewing of Sukkerpunch and hand on heart the band are definitely gelling together well.

With the E.P. Not Your God out now and, according to a reliable informant, an album due out in 2015, the future is looking good for Sukkerpunch.
