The band enjoys a rich heritage, having formerly been the band of Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury, West Yorkshire, a company owned by John Foster. A French horn player, Foster joined with others in a small brass and reed band in Queensbury in 1816.

After this, and its replacement the Queenshead Band, both faltered, Foster and a group of musicians established the New Mill band in 1855, outfitting it with uniforms made from the mill’s own cloth.

Most of the musicians in the band also worked at the mill, and a close bond was fostered with the local community. The band has remained active ever since, and still rehearses in its original rooms.

Tickets for the April 26 performance, priced £15, are available in advance on 01663 742951, or on the door on the night of the performance.
