Central England Co-operative says the move has been made with ‘deep regret’ and is due to ‘a decline in sales’ and expected further losses in future at the Elder Way store.
The company says it is now in talks with staff affected by the closure and thanked them for their ‘excellent work’, ‘commitment’ and ‘dedication’.

A Central England Co-operative spokesperson said today: “The society can confirm it is closing its food store in Elder Way, Chesterfield.
“It is with great regret that the society has taken this very difficult decision following a full review of the trading performance of the store, which has indicated a decline in sales with increasing losses projected in future years.
“Like other retailers, we are constantly adapting to retail challenges at a local level and this decision is necessary to protect the long-term future and growth of Central England Co-op as a whole.

“The society is now in consultation with colleagues affected by the closure. Where possible we aim to offer colleagues opportunities to be redeployed into other business areas.
“A date for the proposed closure has yet to be confirmed,” the spokesperson added.
