The proposals have been submitted to Bolsover District Council in the hopes that two units on Sykes Field Retail Park will be transformed into a gym.

If approved, the gym would be operated by a franchisee - Snap Fitness 24/7 - which operates more than 85 sites in the United Kingdom and boasts over 400,000 members in the USA. The company was founded in 2003 by Peter Taunton with headquarters in Chanhassen, in Minnesota.

In a planning statement prepared by Peacock and Smith, on behalf of Morrisons, Snap Fitness 24/7 is said to “have been a leader in fitness innovation since 2003 and offer inclusive and supporting fitness experience to its members at all levels with a 24/7 access to premium equipment and facilities”.

The proposals would see the 772 square metre gym open 24/7 and is expected to create at least six new jobs. The units, previously occupied by Morrisons’ homeware brand Nutmeg, are now unoccupied.

In a noise impact statement prepared by Acoustic Control Engineers and Consultants it was estimated that the gym’s peak hours would be between 6pm and 7pm - when an estimated 19 users are expected - and between 5am and 6pm - when an estimated 17 users are expected.

It was concluded that the noise impact on neighbours would be ‘negligible’ and that there would be “no significant acoustic impact” arising from the use of the gym equipment or associated vehicle traffic.

Bolsover has one pre-existing gym - Castle Gym - located on Market Place.

The Nutmeg store in Bolsover became the first standalone store to be opened by Morrisons and stocked homeware including cushions, bedding, candles, and kitchen equipment.

Comments on the application can be made on the Bolsover District Council website using the application reference 22/00243/FUL. Comments can be made until May 30. Neighbours will be consulted until May 31 before a decision is expected to be made by Bolsover District Council by July 3.
