The best used Audis for all budgets

We pick the top secondhand Audis from £2000 to £25,000

Audi is a much-envied car brand that many of us would like to have sat on our drive. But not all of us can stretch to the cost of a brand-new Audi, particularly as its premium appeal brings premium prices compared to mainstream alternatives.

This is where the used car market comes into play. Because Audis are upmarket cars, they are extraordinarily well built – making them great used purchases if you pick the right model. Their popularity means there’s plenty of choice out there too, for all budgets.

Here, then, are our pick of the best used Audis for every price bracket.

Budget: £2000

Audi A3 (1996-2003)

The first Audi A3 was the original premium family hatchback. It was a hit from the off and, while there are now lots of well-worn examples out there, it’s still possible to track down a well-loved model still with years of life left in it. We spotted: 1999 1.9 TDI SE, 95,000 miles, £1500

Audi A4 (2000-2005)

The impressive 2000-model A4 is a sophisticated mid-size saloon that still feels contemporary despite its sub-£2000 prices. At this budget, make sure engine cambelts have been changed recently, and look for cars with plentiful service histories. We spotted: 2004 1.8T Limited Edition, 82,000 miles, £1995

Audi A2 (2000-2005)

The clever Audi A2 is an ingenious model built entirely from aluminium. It’s light, so it’s good on fuel, and brilliant design means it’s far roomier inside than its diminutive dimensions suggest. A sure-fire money-making investment if you get a good one. We spotted: 2004 1.4 SE, 85,000 miles, £2000

Budget: £5000

Audi Cabriolet (1990-2000)

Made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales, the Audi Cabriolet is a classic today lifted far beyond its humble Audi 80-derived underpinnings. Currently great investment potential, as prices for the smooth, well-built drop-top can only go one way. We spotted: 2000 2.6E, 42,000 miles, £4995

Audi A6 Avant (2004-2011)

The Audi A6 Avant has a cavernous boot, is a great cruiser and its top-grade interior is exceedingly well built: factor in good value secondhand prices and you have an excellent family-focused used car with a touch of class. We spotted: 2007 2.0 TDI SE, 99,000 miles, £4495

Audi TT (1999-2006)

The original Audi TT is a design classic that wowed even those with no interest in cars. It’s still a head-turner today, and its sheer popularity when new means there’s ample choice on the used market for you to be choosy and pick out the best.  We spotted: 2002 1.8T 225, 56,000 miles, £4750

Budget: £10,000

Audi A1 (2010-present)

Audi’s classy supermini hatchback is related to the Volkswagen Polo beneath the surface, but is a genuine Mini contender to look at, sit in, and to drive. It delivers the genuine Audi feel in a classy, pint-sized package. We spotted: 2012 1.4 TFSI Sport, 23,500 miles, £9988

Audi TT (2006-2014)

If you can’t stretch to a brand new TT, the previous generation car still cuts a dash and is now exceptional value for money. You can get diesel versions but we’d stick with the 2.0-litre petrol; just make sure the leather seats haven’t worn through, a sure sign of neglect. We spotted: 2010 2.0 TFSI, 42,000 miles, £9912

Audi A3 (2012-present)

The Audi A3 is one of the best family hatchbacks on sale, full stop. That you can get a current-shape model for £10,000 is seriously tempting, particularly as all engines – both diesel and petrol – are fuel-efficient, smooth and punchy. We spotted: 2012 2.0 TDI Sport 3dr, 46,000 miles, £10,000

Budget: £25,000

Audi RS4 (2005-2008)

An enthusiast’s dream, this modern-classic Audi is brilliant in corners and, thanks to a fantastic 4.2-litre V8, fast on the straights as well. A connoisseur’s RS Audi that, thanks to its great reputation, is unlikely to depreciate much more. We spotted: 2006 RS4 Avant, 49,000 miles, £23,990

Audi TT (2014-present)

Yes, you can get into a new-shape TT for less than £25,000. There are lots of low-mileage examples on the market to choose from too, making it a cost-effective way of getting into one of the smartest new coupes on sale. We spotted: 2016 2.0 TFSI Sport, 7000 miles, £23,830

Audi A4 (2015-present)

The latest A4 is an acclaimed best-seller from Audi. It’s an excellent all-rounder that has aced rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in group tests: picking up a bargain nearly-new model is an even smarter way of getting into one. We spotted: 2017 2.0 TDI Ultra SE, 2000 mils, £24,000
