A number of major car makers have issued recalls in the past month to rectify potential safety issues in some of their cars.

Among the brands affected are Audi, Citroen, Kia, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot Renault, Seat, Skoda, Toyota.

Vehicle recalls are common in the automotive industry and are generally a result of the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), or the manufacturer determining that a fault in a vehicle constitutes a safety defect. According to the DVSA Code of Conduct, a car must be recalled if: “a failure due to design and/or construction, is likely to affect the safe operation of the product/aftermarket part without prior warning to the user and may pose a significant risk to the driver, occupants and others. This defect will be common to a number of products/aftermarket parts that have been sold for use in the United Kingdom”.

Among the key recalls since the start of November were:

Audi

Models affected: A3 and Q2 built between 02/08/2017

Concern: Rear hub carriers not manufactured to correct standard

Description: The hardening process for the rear wheel bearing housings may not have been correctly performed. In the worst case this could lead to a fractured housing. Should a fractured housing occur there would be abnormal noises, bad tyre wear and a theoretical possibility of wheel loss.

Remedial action: Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and replace the right and left rear wheel bearing housings.

Citroen

Models affected: C Zero

Concern: A non-conformity in an internal component could affect deployment of the passenger airbag

Description: An internal component of the passenger’s airbag triggering module may not conform to specification. This could affect the triggering of the device in the event of an impact.

Models affected: Sorento built between 02/09/2011 and 31/10/2011

Concern: Rubber diesel fuel feed pipe may harden or crack

Description: The diesel fuel feed pipe that supplies fuel to the high pressure pump may deteriorate prematurely. The customer may initially notice the smell of diesel fuel leaking onto the engine. If the concern is not resolved the rubber hose may harden and crack due to fatigue. This in turn could allow the pipe to leak diesel fuel onto the engine. As with all fuel leaks there is a risk of catching fire.

Remedial action: Recall the 24 vehicles that are likely to be affected and replace the fuel feed hose.

Mercedes-Benz

Models affected: GLC

Concern: Front and side plastic covers of the panoramic sunroof may not be bonded to specification

Description: The bonding retaining front and side plastic covers on the sunroof may not meet specification. As a result these could detach whilst the vehicle is in motion.

Concern: Rear right wheel arch protector may deform and rub against and damage brake hose

Description: In conditions such as high speed and high vehicle loading the rear right wheel arch protector may contact the brake hose. Over time repeated contact could wear through the outer protective cover of the brake hose. This could damage the inner reinforcing braiding and in an extreme case wear a hole in the hose which could lead to brake fluid leakage.

Remedial action: On affected vehicles re-work the rear wheel arch protector and if necessary replace the brake pipe with new.
