Students across Derbyshire are finding out their eagerly awaited GCSE results today after sitting exams for the first time since the pandemic began.

A week on from A-level results day, the majority of pupils will be able to collect their GCSE grades from 8am this morning (Thursday, August 25).

In England, GCSEs are graded on a numerical system from 9 to 1, rather than from A to E – a grading system which was brought in alongside a new GCSE curriculum for 2017.

Students at The Ecclesbourne School secure one of the strongest sets of GCSE results in the school’s history

There were celebrations across The Ecclesbourne School today – with 93 per cent of students gaining at least five good passes and over 40 per cent of all GCSEs sat securing a 7 or above.

Overall, 90 per cent gained a good GCSE in English and Maths and 73 per cent of these were at grade 5 or above.

The school’s previous strongest set of exam results was in 2019, the last year of formal examinations before the pandemic, and results in 2022 are up against nearly every measure.

Headteacher James McNamara said: “I am absolutely delighted with these exceptionally strong set of results from our students and a  record number of this year’s GCSE students have applied to stay on at The Ecclesbourne School to study their A-levels in September. Over 85 per cent are planning to stay on.

“While we have a huge amount to celebrate as a school, today is about each individual student being able to be justifiably proud of themselves for what they have achieved. They have worked phenomenally hard, and they remained focused and calm through the turbulence we have all faced.

“Alongside their academic achievements they are also well-rounded young people. They are dedicated to their academic studies, but they are also doing some incredible things outside of lessons. They are a credit to the community.”

Among the smiling faces were Holly Buckingham Hargrave who was delighted to have achieved grade 9s in all but one subject, particularly excelling in languages.

She hopes that these grades will open the door to her studying Medieval and Modern Languages at Cambridge after Sixth Form at Ecclesbourne.

Holly, pictured above, said: “My dream is to work internationally, and this has been inspired by me heading off to Vienna this summer with the Voices of Derby choir where I meet young people from across Europe. It was an inspiring experience being with young people who can speak different languages.”

Amelia Pitter achieved eight grade 9s at GCSE which is a significant milestone for her as she looks to study Medicine at university in the future - but her GCSEs were not the only exams she sat this summer.

Amelia, pictured above, said: “I volunteer at a hearing-Impaired unit in Allestree, and have completed my Level 2 qualification in sign language alongside my GCSEs. It has been an amazing experience which will only help me when I start my medical career – and is something I want to continue to do alongside my A-levels.”

Ella Kew also achieved seven grade 9s, Zahra Shelton was celebrating achieving eight grade 9s and Tim Crowson achieved nine grade 9s in his GCSEs and is returning to the Sixth Form to study A-levels in Chemistry, French, Biology and Maths.

Mr McNamara added: “It is not the headline outcome figures that I am most delighted with. Initial indications suggest that across the Class of 2022 students made exceptional progress from their various starting points.

“To achieve this as a school we have to offer so much more than academic rigour. Happy students thrive, and that is why it is important to also applaud our staff for their care, support and their generosity with their time. They have done all that they can to ensure students entered this critical stage of their education with confidence and calmness – and that approach has clearly helped our amazing students to shine.”

“We are thrilled with our students’ success which continues The Ecclesbourne School’s tradition of high academic achievement for all. Today’s outcomes serve as a testament to the commitment of our students, the skill and dedication of our staff and Governors and the incredible support we receive from parents and carers.”
