Eckington cancer survivor backs Proms in the Peaks

The Sheffield-based Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s outdoor concert takes place at Losehill Hall YHA, in Castleton, on Sunday.

Cancer survivor Jane Austen said: “It’s been an extremely difficult couple of years to say the least. But you have to get on with things otherwise it’s easy to become consumed by sadness and grief. I’m keeping busy and I’m just so very thankful for the care I received during my time at Weston Park that it makes sense for me to support its charity’s event this summer.”

The grandmother and mother-of-two had already lost her father and two partners to cancer when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Jane benefited from Weston Park Hospital consultants operating in the region and many of the hospital’s patients come from Chesterfield and north Derbyshire.

Jane is now starting to rebuild her life after finishing treatment in January this year.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, which celebrates its 20th anniversary, is inviting people to the musical extravaganza.

Headline acts include world-famous Tenor John Hudson and international soprano Deborah Norman.

Each year the cancer charity has to raise over £200,000 to ensure the centre can continue its vital work.

Deputy Charity Director Tina Harrison said: “It is incredibly saddening to hear stories like Jane’s but also humbling to see how people carry on despite their painful circumstances.

“Jane is a true inspiration to us all and we’re delighted that she can join us at Proms in the Peaks this summer.

“We are celebrating our 20th anniversary and we’re encouraging supporters, patients and hospital staff to join us as we fly the flag for Weston Park Hospital.”

Gates open from 1.30pm and the concert runs from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Spectators can bring picnics. Tickets cost £15 each (£13 concessions) and are available to buy online at www.promsinthepeaks.org.uk. For details on the event or the charity call (0114) 226 5370.
