This smiling group of young men were taking part in national service in 1951-1952.
The picture was brought in to the Mercury by Matlock resident Bernard Iles.
It was taken outside the old Matlock Drill Hall which was used by the town’s Army Cadets.
Mr Iles brother Maurice is pictured on the back row. He was 21 when the photo was taken and is now 80.
Mr Iles said: “When my brother was coming out of national service I was going in.
“It was not so bad. I went in to the parachute regiment and spent 20 months in Egypt. I can still remember the place we used to go and swim every morning.”
