IT was a classic picture of of festive fun when this picture appeared in the Mercury’s sister paper, The Derbyshire Times, back in January of 1959.
Many of the children enjoying their party on here will be in their 60s by now, and most probably have grandchildren of the same age now.
It was the annual get together organised by Patons and Baldwins for workers and their families.
The company was a wool manufacturers that had their premises on Smedley Street. During the war it had to close and a munitions factory came up from London.
It returned to wool manufacturing in 1946. The company was merged with J & P Coats in 1961.
