It’s 1967, the year of colour TV, the year of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the year Harold Wilson applied for EEC membership (which was later incorporated into the EU).

Another momentous event was about to take place....the forming of the most successful big band in history, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra!

This year current and long serving orchestra leader Chris Dean and the gang are celebrating the orchestra’s 50th birthday and will be playing in Buxton next month.

Over the years the big band has performed in theatres all over Europe, regularly appearing on many TV shows such as The Les Dawson Show, The Morecambe and Wise Show, Pebble Mill, Wheel Tappers and Shunters and a Royal Variety performance.

With Radio 2 broadcasts every week and numerous album recordings, the orchestra also toured with Tony Bennett, Matt Monro, Frankie Vaughan and Mel Torme – and played concerts with Shirley Bassey.

The Syd Lawrence Orchestra will be performing at Buxton Opera House on Sunday, April 9, at 7.30pm.
