9 ways to make the most of the sunshine in Derbyshire this weekend
The weather in Derbyshire is tipped to be '˜hotter than Ibiza' this weekend - so what are you going to do?
With highs of 26C expected in the East Midlands, people will be out and about making the most of the sunshine.
Here are 9 things you can do in Derbyshire whilst enjoying the weather:
Visit the grounds of the biggest stately home in Derbyshire. The 1000 acre park boasts a magnificent garden, a farm, an outdoor adventure playground and a number of shops and eateries, as well as tours inside the historic house itself. This attraction caters for the needs of all ages to enjoy the sunshine this weekend.
Take a picnic to the Peaks
With dozens of villages, valleys and secret hideouts, the Peak District is the perfect place to soak up the sun - whether on foot or cycling. From taking a stroll at Thorpe Cloud or Kinder Scout, to visiting the tourist attractions and shops at Castelton and Bakewell - there’s plenty to enjoy in the great outdoors.
Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath
With a wide range of rides and attractions - from the Western World and pirates play area, to the log flume and Drop Tower – Gullivers Kingdom is a great theme park for children. You can buy tickets at a discounted price if you book online at least two days in advance.
Chesterfield area walking festival (from May 7)
Enjoy Chesterfield and the surrounding areas by taking part in the walking festival. The website states people can take a stroll around pretty villages, look at flowers, listen to birds and take in some history. There will also be opportunities for breaks - including coffees and pints at the local pubs.
Matlock Farm Park
For a ‘wonderful visit in the visit in the fresh air and tranquility of the countryside’ with plenty for the kids to do - this is the place to be. There are lots of animals to see and feed and educational talks and activities throughout the day. There is a variety of play equipment, go-carts, a café and shop to browse.
Go Ape in Buxton
The Top Tree Adventure features high ropes, awesome crossings, tunnels, bridges and an epic wind-in-your-face zip wires in the trees facing over the Peak District. It is within walking distance of Buxton itself, so you would also be able to explore the old spa town on the same day.
Midland Railway, Butterley (Swanwick, Ripley)
If your children love trains they will love it here. With trains operating on Saturday and Sunday (May 7-8) families will also be able to just jump on board and enjoy the views of the fascinating surrounding areas.
Buxton Raceway boasts a 380 metre tarmac oval with steel plate fencing and a figure of eight circuit. The facility is offering the chance for kids (5 years old to 15 years old inclusive) to gain admission to race meetings for free in 2016. This applies to most events at Buxton Raceway.
Willow Tree Family Farm
Based in Shirebrook, Willow tree Farm is home to a number of meerkats that children can meet. The attraction has farm animals to see including goats and llamas. Furry friends area with chinchillas, rabbits, degus, chipmunks, meerkats and guinea pigs. Reptile house with lizards, stick insects, snakes, millipedes and cockroaches.
