THE landmark clocktower in Hall Leys Park, Matlock, rises from the floodwaters in this photo found by Darley Dale resident Noel Aspey.
Mr Aspey was one of the intrepid kayakers in the picture taken during the floods of December 1960.
His passenger is childhood friend Jane Wright.
Mr Aspey, who was 15 at the time, recalls Jane had no way of getting home during the floods, so he came to her rescue in his boat.
“I had canoed most of the way along the A6 from Matlock Bath, where I lived at that time,” Mr Aspey said.
Residents were warned to stay at home during the floods, which inundated an area about five miles long and a mile wide.
Today, residents and visitors in Matlock can still see the eventual height of the water marked on a footbridge near the park.
The photographer is unknown.
