The angry sheep has so far injured at least three men, with one of them requiring two operations to his hand, but the latest attack is reportedly the first time a woman has been attacked.

Kirk Ireton Parish Council chairman Kath Stevens said that the woman, thought to be a holidaymaker, escaped serious injuries and the child was unharmed.

She said: “There was a lady and a child attacked by the ram yesterday.

Villagers claim they are victims of ram’s vicious reign of terror.

“I think she picked the child up to protect the child and then she got butted down the leg.

“A man who lives nearby heard her screaming and he went to shoo it off.”

Kirk Ireton Parish Council met to discuss the ram last week and to decide how to protect people using the footpath through its field, off Halfmoon Lane.

They heard from villager David Evans how he injured his thumb, which later became infected, as he tried to fend off the ram.

Another villager required two operations to his hand after he was attacked by the ram and a third victim a holiday-maker, was left with a bruised thigh.

Mr Evans was interviewed by BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine Show today, describing his “wrestling match” with the ram, which has made national headlines since the story broke.

Other callers then contributed to the discussion, giving stories of their brushes with angry rams, including a listener from Leek whose pet lamb turned on her once reaching adulthood.
