Area set for gas & water works

A nine week revamp of the gas mains system in Matlock is well underway.

At the same time villagers in Hathersage and Winster are also set for major water and gas mains work.

The nine-week project in Matlock, which began on 24 July, will replace the existing iron mains with new, hard wearing plastic pipes that will have a lifespan of at least 80 years.

Last month engineers began renewing pipes along the next section of Church Street.

The closure will be in place from the junction with Pic Tor, heading south to number 148 Church Street, the phase is expected to take three weeks.

While the work is underway, this section of Church Street will be closed to through-traffic with access for pedestrians and residents’ vehicles only. Signed diversion routes are in place for through traffic.

The National Grid shuttle bus will continue to run but residents are advised there will be changes to the timetable in light of the next phase of work. Vehicle access remains for all businesses in Church Street and Starkholmes Road that are outside of the road closure section.

National Grid authorising engineer Paul Patrick said: “This work is essential to securing gas supplies for residents and businesses for decades to come.

“Every effort is being made to complete this important project as soon as possible and to minimise the inconvenience to local people.”

At the same time, work is set to begin in Hathersage on a project that will see £500,000 worth of water pipes installed by Severn Trent Water.

National Grid is also set to start work this month on a gas revamp in Winster, which will take a total of nine weeks.

The project is similar to the one currently underway in Matlock and will see 600 metres of new plastic pipes installed at East Bank.

East Bank will be closed to traffic during the work and a diversion will be in place and there will be a signed route in place for motorists and pedestrians that will be maintained at all times.
