Rotary: In February the Rotary Club of Bakewell held its annual pea and pie supper in the Ashford Village Institute. It was the brainchild of John Hollingworth ten years ago who initially ran it with the help of his family and who sadly passed away last year.

Eighty-two guests filled the hall to capacity to enjoy a meal of steak pies from Critichlows, the famous Bakewell butchers, accompanied by traditional mushy peas followed by home made trifle or fruit salad made by the wives of the Rotary members.

The audience was then entertained by the “Heads and Tails” group of Tom Pilkington on the guitar and Robin Bower on the banjo, who received great acclaim from the audience for their reprise of many old favourites.

The evening was organised by the International Committee of the Rotary Club to raise funds for desks and reading lamps for disabled young people in the YAKKUM Centre in Java, Indonesia and for the supply of sewing machines to a project in North Rwanda run by the Goboka Trust.

The club was pleased to raise a little over £3,000 for these good causes.
