BAKEWELL: BBC journalist visits Lady Manners

Lady Manners School pupils were paid a visit by a former student who is already building an illustrious career in the BBC.

Old girl Elizabeth Davis, a successful journalist, visited Lady Manners as part of a programme of events run by the school’s Sixth Form team.

Elizabeth is currently the staff writer and digital editor at BBC Music Magazine.

She talked to the Sixth Formers about her career journey since leaving Lady Manners School in 2006, having gained ‘A’ levels in English Literature; Drama & Theatre Studies; French; and Music.

This journey has taken her via Cambridge University, where she discovered her interest in journalism, and though City University in London, completing a Masters in Magazine Journalism.

Elizabeth gave a piece of advice to her Sixth Form audience: make your own luck. She was following her own advice as she worked hard to find placements to give her the experience needed to take the next step on the career ladder.

This has worked well for her – as well as the large box of chocolates she made a point of buying as a parting gift for each team with which she worked!

Tim Sizer, the Head of Lady Manners School Sixth Form, said: “We have arranged this series of events to bring careers choices to life for students. Elizabeth has certainly given our students food for thought, whether or not they are interested in journalism as a career. We were delighted to welcome back such a hard-working, and successful ex-student.”
