Bakewell plays host to BBC Radio 4 show

The third in the new series of the programme, after Belfast and Leeds, the show was recorded in early July and broadcast on Tuesday.

Chaired by Jay Raynor, the panel was made up of: food scientist Peter Barham; chain restaurant founder, Henry Dimbleby; chef Angela Hartnett; and former winner of Masterchef, Tim Anderson.

Tickets for the event were snapped up virtually overnight on the BBC’s website.

The recording took place in the Assembly Hall. Whilst the questions selected were from people in North Derbyshire, the packed audience came from a wide area, some travelling over 50 miles. All arrived in good time to submit their questions and enjoy the new bar facilities which had recently been installed.

Local input in the programme came from Marian Wright of Bloomers gave a brief history of the Bakewell Pudding and explained how it was differed from the Bakewell Tart which originated as a commercial product; and the Head Gardener at Chatsworth who spoke about the commercial development of the banana from a plant acquired by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and grown on and propagated in a glasshouse at Chatsworth by the famous gardener Joseph Paxton.
