Beat the compost bin price rise

Time is running out for residents to buy a discounted compost bin before a price increase comes in at the start of April.

Currently the cheapest compost bin through Derbyshire County Council’s discount scheme is £16 plus a £5.49 delivery charge.

Cllr John Allsop, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for recycling and technology, said: “I’d encourage anyone thinking of getting into composting to buy a bin before the end of March to save that little bit extra.

“Composting is simple to do and once you get started you’ll be surprised at just how much daily household waste can be recycled this way.

“We want to help Derbyshire residents reduce the amount of waste that they send to landfill.

“Composting at home is a great way of achieving this and also helps protect the environment.

“Householders can also save money by composting as they will find a reduced need to buy peat or compost.”

More than a third of household waste is made up of organic material which can be composted.

Grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, unwanted plants, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, paper and cardboard and even the contents of the vacuum bag are all ideal for composting.
