Ben to run in memory of ex-Buxton teacher

After shedding the pounds, a Tideswell runner hopes to use his new-found love of running to raise pounds for charity in memory of a former Buxton headteacher.

Ben Brindley will tackle the Ladybower Ultra Marathon on September 22 - a gruelling 50-mile run on an undulating course in the vicinity of Ladybower Reservoir.

The 30-year-old will take on the challenge in memory of his wife Kathryn’s grandad, John O’Meara, who passed away in January.

John was formerly a long-standing headteacher of St Thomas More School and a respected member of the Buxton community.

“It is nice to do something in memory of a chap who was so well-regarded and helped so many people, said Ben, of Gordon Road, who is hoping to raise £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

“It’s a good way to give something back to the charity to say thank-you for the invaluable help and support they offered.”

Ben first discovered a taste for running after turning to the sport to keep fit and loose weight. Since then, the Tideswell Running Club member has completed his first half marathon and took part in the Red Bull Steeplechase.

He added: “I’m really looking forward to the race, despite all the mental and physical challenges ahead.”
