Big-hearted Chesterfield salon owner offering new service for people with depression and anxiety

Hayley Meehan, owner of Autumn House Hair and Beauty, on Derby Road, will be opening up the salon on days when it is usually closed so people who are suffering with mental health issues can come in and get a pamper away from the hustle and bustle of a normal working day.
She said that people will not be under any pressure while they are there and they will be in the company of others in a similar situation to them – giving them an opportunity to make new friends.

“When I first started my job I really struggled with talking to different people I did not know but now I am used to it.”
The 26-year-old told the Derbyshire Times that she has suffered with anxiety for as long as she can remember and she wanted to do something to help people who may be put off from attending the salon because it is so busy.
Hayley put out an appeal on social media and the post received a positive response from people who said it was an ‘amazing’ idea.

When asked if it was a rewarding feeling, Hayley said: “That’s not the reason I am doing it but it was nice to see them come out of their shell more.”
The service will be available once a month on a Monday, although if the demand is there then it may be extended.
The next day will be January 14.
A post on the salon’s Facebook page read: “Do you or someone you know suffer with anxiety, depression, a personality disorder or anything similar that stops you getting your hair done despite wanting that all important pamper?

So if there is someone sat in the chair next to you, they’ll be in the same boat, no worry of having to make small talk with myself, or anyone else if you don’t want to.”
