Blood Brothers: Compelling classic here for one week only

From the very opening notes of Willy Russell's Blood Brothers, a shiver surged through the audience at Nottingham's Theatre Royal.

The story of the Johnston twins, separated at birth and constantly drawn together by destiny, is packed tight with emotion, suspense and humour, and is without a doubt a play that can be seen over and over without losing its impact.

And with a musical score comprising of haunting and repetitive tunes that play in your head for days, it is hard not to fall in love with the show.

This time around, some particularly stunning vocal performances came from the menacing Narrator, played by Kristofer Harding, and Lyn Paul, who has been in the role of Mrs Johnston for more than 15 years.

The highlight of the performance was its famous climax at the council offices, in which each movement was jaw-clenchingly tense and every line spoken to perfection.

As the final notes of Tell Me It’s Not True tapered off, the entire house rose to its feet to give a roaring standing ovation. What an opening night!

This compelling classic is in Nottingham for one week only and should not be missed.

Blood Brothers runs until Saturday at Theatre Royal. Tickets cost £15 to £39.50 and are available from trch.co.uk or by calling 0115 989 5555.
