Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, August 7, how Philip Marriott, 40, of Chaucer Road, Newbold, Chesterfield, was spotted at Tesco, on Lockoford Lane, Chesterfield.

Prosecuting solicitor John Cooper said the manager said Marriott was sitting with a knife and a bottle of Martini and he noticed a cut near the defendant’s right wrist.

Marriott told police he felt depressed and took the knife to self-harm. He pleaded guilty to possessing a knife without good reason and to stealing Martini after the incident in July.

Julie Page, defending, said Marriott has alcohol problems and has suffered bereavements. Magistrates sentenced him to a community order until February, 2016. He was ordered to pay £9 compensation and a £60 victim surcharge.
