Brave Barbara Stringer, 65, of Cutthorpe, was diagnosed with the disease 10 years ago and is now helping with the fundraising drive to create an all-new £2.5m centre.

She and other festival committee members are determined to do everything they can to make sure the magical milestone is met.

“We decided to raise money for Macmillan because everybody knows someone with cancer, therefore it is to everyone’s benefit that we help the charity make the new Chesterfield Centre as good as it possibly can be,” said Barbara.

“My mother had cancer many years ago and several other members of the family have had various forms of it over the years.

“Also, a very good friend of mine died just last year from cancer of the oesophagus and his wife is currently in remission from leukaemia.

“This new centre will make life so much easier for those receiving treatment. The journey I used to have to make to Sheffield for mine made an already stressful time even worse, so having the facilities all under one roof in Chesterfield will benefit so many people.”

The festival starts on Friday with a well blessing service at 6.30pm at the village institute followed by a night of live music.

It will then see a whole host of family-friendly events taking place on the Cutthorpe Recreation Ground, including a tombola, cream teas and craft stalls.

There will be a scarecrow competition, children’s fair, classic cars and bikes, well dressing, children’s entertainment, Cutthorpe bake-off, dog show and a 5K fun run.

Money raised at the festival will help build the new state-of-the-art Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The new development will ensure that people with cancer in North and North-East Derbyshire will be able to receive vital treatment, care and support in one purpose-built facility.

Macmillan needs to raise £2.5m to make the centre a reality, and Barbara is urging people to get involved and go along to the Cutthorpe Festival and help raise as much money as possible.

She said: “If you wish to donate we’ll be doing bucket donations throughout the weekend, we really hope people will dig deep to help make the lives of those battling cancer and their families that little bit easier.”
