Bumper takings at Xmas Market

DESPITE gloomy economic times and weather to match, organisers at Bakewell Christmas Markets were celebrating another extremely successful festive experience.

This year’s event, held on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26, November, was a huge hit with shoppers and traders alike with many stall holders reporting bumper takings.

With twice as many stalls – offering delicious food, gifts, decorations and much more – some traders reported that profits had surged by over 70 per cent, compared to the first ever Christmas Markets last year.

Entertainers took to the streets throughout the weekend and the Royal British Legion provided the town with a fantastic display of motor bikes.

Saturday evening saw a lantern display where the sky was filled with colour before exploding with fireworks.

Richard Young, of Bakewell’s Farm Shop, said: “From the Agricultural Business centre, Bakewell bridge could not be seen for the number of people walking over it.

“I believe all businesses have benefited from the event and it’s fantastic to show visitors just what Bakewell has to offer.”

Plans are already underway for next year’s event, thanks to organisers Sue Smethurst and Janet Bailey, and promises to be bigger and better than before.
