Chesterfield magistrates’ court originally heard how Joseph O’Sullivan, 70, of St John’s Road, Newbold, Chesterfield, twice sneaked into the victim’s unlocked home before escaping with money.

Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said the victim was an 83-year-old man who gets about by means of a mobility vehicle and he has to have it in his home to plug it in and to do that he needs to leave his door insecure.

Mrs Allsop explained his family noticed small amounts of change were going missing from his home so they installed a camera and Joseph O’Sullivan was seen stealing £6 for alcohol and tobacco.

While O’Sullivan was on bail for this offence, according to Mrs Allsop, he went back to the property and was caught on camera stealing £9.

O’Sullivan pleaded guilty to the two burglaries which happened in October and November and his case was adjourned to Derby Crown Court for sentencing on Monday, February 17.

Defence solicitor Jon Barber had said the circumstances were unusual because O’Sullivan knows the victim and he made it clear he would never hurt him.

Mr Barber explained O’Sullivan had helped himself to money and never considered the offences as burglaries, but the case would be dealt with at crown court due to the victim’s vulnerability.

O’Sullivan was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment.
