One of the region’s most prominent business leaders has been honoured with a prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to the economy and business in the East Midlands.

Sir John Peace was unveiled as the recipient of this year’s Special Award from the Chamber of Commerce for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, at its annual dinner.

One of the UK’s pre-eminent creators of wealth, jobs and prosperity for the past 30 years, Sir John is the founder and Chairman of global information services giant Experian.

He is the current Chairman of Standard Chartered plc which ranks as one of the top 20 companies in the FTSE 100 by market capitalisation. He also leads the Board of the Burberry Group.

In 2012, he took on the Lord Lieutenancy of Nottinghamshire. He has chaired the Board of Governors of Nottingham Trent University and is a trustee of the Djanogly City Academy. He also chairs the extremely important partnership committee comprising Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Economic Growth Board.

Sir John is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Nottingham. He was knighted in 2011 for services to business and the voluntary sector.

Sir John couldn’t collect the award in person, as he attended a dinner at The Mansion House in honour of the Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, but the award was collected on his behalf by James Russell, Experian’s Director of Corporate Communications.

Chamber President Tim Parker said: “Each year the Chamber likes to pay tribute to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to business in our area.

“This year, there was a good number of nominations and the Chamber Board had a difficult choice, but I was delighted to announce that their first choice was Sir John Peace.

“With his roots firmly in Nottinghamshire, Sir John is a giant in British business. He has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in business, of which there are many highlights. He has played an equally important role in his community and is a worthy recipient of this award.”
