In preparation for the part, Kate met Eva, now aged 89, describing her as “an inspirational lady”.

The 29-year-old, who divides her time between India and London, has also been selected to star in the film version, which will commence production next year.

The former St Thomas More School pupil said: “She went through so much and it is a story of triumph over tragedy, and I hope the challenging times I have been through in my life help bring emotion to the character.

“Eva herself will be there for the opening night in Mumbai!

“We then are performing the play for the United Nations in Los Angeles and Hilary Clinton is hosting it.”
