Campaigner calls for no fracking in the Peak District

A campaigner is warning residents the time is now if they want to prevent fracking in the national park.

Martin Porter, of the Frack Free Glossop group, is warning that a British geological survey showed there were fossil fuels under the Edale area of the Peak District, meaning it could be targeted for fracking in the future.

He said the Government is currently consulting on fracking throughout the UK, after which companies will be able to apply for licences to frack.

Martin said: “When the Government’s consultation ends on March 28, two thirds of England could be licensed for fracking, including the whole of Derbyshire and the Peak District national park.

“The only way these companies have any chance of making money on this is to extract every gram of gas there is down there.

“They either frack everywhere, or nowhere. That is the decision the country now needs to make.”

Hydraulic fracturing, or ‘fracking’ is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas.

Martin said the negative impacts of this include noise and water pollution.

He recommended that residents write to their MP urging them to save the Peak District from fracking.
