Cancer walk for woman who lost grandma, mum, twin and sister

Christine Lugg, 67, of Holme Hall was just 10 when her grandmother died from the illness. Eight years later, her mum passed away.

In 1998, Christine’s twin sister Carole succumbed to the disease and last year, her youngest sister died just months after being diagnosed.

“It’s very, very difficult,” said Christine, whose remaining sister, Evelyn Goad, 65, recently underwent a double mastectomy.

“We know thousands of people are affected by cancer, but we would like to put a positive spin on it.

“Most of what you hear is negative, but you also have to remember all those people who have come through it all, and support them.

Christine and Evelyn – who lives in Norfolk – will be taking part in Breast Cancer Care’s Pink Ribbon walk at Chatsworth House.

It is the first time the walk has come to the Peak District stately home.

The Derbyshire Times is an official media partner for the event, which will take charity walkers on either a 20 or 10-mile route from the estate andthrough the Peak District.

Fighting back tears, Christine added: “I am walking in memory of the people I have lost.

“It will bring back memories of everyone, but I just want to do something to help someone else by raising money.”

Registration for the event costs £30, with a fundraising target of £100 per person. Each participant will get a T-shirt, training guide and meal, medal and massage at the end of the walk.
