Future Plans: The Matlock Lido building, which may become a site for a new car park to ease parking problems in the town.

Matlock Lido could be demolished and turned into car parking, a report has recommended.

The plans have been revealed by Derbyshire Dales District Council.

The swimming pool closed its doors last month following the opening of Arc Leisure Matlock.

Planning chiefs now say tenders should be invited for the demolition of the town centre building with proposals to create a pay-and-display car park in its place.

Matlock mayor Barry Hopkinson said: “If the building is just going to be left derelict, this might as well be what happens to it.

“I have nothing against it in principle, as long as it is not turned in to a car park then forgotten about. I hope the district council has some other development in mind.”

Cllr Hopkinson said he would like the site to be transformed into a mixture of shops and a community facility and added if it was turned into a car park he hoped it would provide short stay parking.

Work to knock down the Lido and clear the site is set to cost around £61,500. Work to create a car park is set to cost a further £65,000.

The council states the car park would only be temporary as the site has been identified in the Matlock Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document as a prime development location. The income from the car park is estimated at £60,000 a year and the council says it will recover the costs of creating the car park in just over two years.

Ken Parker of Matlock Civic Association said: “There is a shortage of car parking in Matlock so I have some sympathy with the idea of creating more car parks.

“We think that site lends itself to a multi-purpose art theatre and a market hall, something similar to the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton.”

He added: “Personally I think it seems a bit of a shame to demolish the Lido. I would be nice to find a new use for it.”

A report by specialist consultants recommends that Bakewell Road is developed before the Lido site – so more car parking would be needed.

The new car park will create 75 spaces.
