Local readers may be interested to know that the Bowne House Historical Society of New York, has celebrated in Central Park the 350th anniversary of the arrival there of Thomas Bowne, with some of his family of Lime Tree Farm, Matlock, and the building of their house in Flushing on Long Island NY. The house still stands, and serves as a museum to the history in the USA, of this now successful and illustrious family.
Their home in Matlock was where the Londis store now stands and their land extended to Hurst Farm (another Bowne residence) and beyond.
The American Bownes do not forget their roots in Derbyshire, however, and some of them occasionally visit this area.
The President of the Society recently won prizes in the Queen’s County Farm Museum’s annual fair with her range of jams and pickles under the Lime Tree Farm label!
