Celebrations as community venue is saved

Villagers are celebrating after funds have been raised to keep their treasured community venue up and running.

The headquarters of Brassington, Bradbourne and Hognaston Royal British Legion on Meadow Rise in Brassington was threatened with closure after seven year battle with reoccurring damp.

Despite numerous attempts to stop the damp rising up through the foundations, it had begun to seep into the wooden joists which hold up the floor.

Springing into action the Legion successfully took on the challenge of raising the necessary £27,140 to revive the hall.

Funds have come from the Exton Trust a local body which £10,000, and The Veolia Environmental Trust which awarded a grant of £13,600. The remainder was fundraised through Branch activities.

The repairs will begin October 1 to replace the hall’s wooden floor and joists followed by major excavation work to permanently stop the damp. New windows and central heating system will also be installed.

The work will take six weeks to complete creating a modern and facility for the whole community to use and enjoy for generations to come.
