Derby Crown Court heard how Richard Cano, 35, of Parks Avenue, South Wingfield, left a trail of blood after he burgled a home in Bolehill, Matlock.

The prolific criminal had previously appeared on BBC’s East Midlands Today when he received help to rebuild his life but defence barrister James Moore said during a previous hearing that Cano’s fame and previous convictions had made it difficult for him to find work and he had resorted to crime again.

Cano had been released from custody only last year for handling stolen goods, according to Mr Moore, and his previous offending had been motivated by a drug addiction leading to burglaries and he became the subject of a rehabilitation on TV.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty to the November 20 burglary at Bolehill, had been granted a pre-sentence report to consider his background before he was jailed on February 4 to 32 months of custody.

Police revealed the owners of the burgled house had returned to find a smashed dining room window and a phone, TV, laptop and watches had been stolen.

Traces of blood were found, according to police, and crime scene investigators gathered damning evidence.

Police confirmed that the blood produced a DNA match to Cano and he was arrested.

Mr Moore told a previous hearing: “There was a hue and cry on his release because he was on East Midlands Today saying he was getting help to rebuild his life and he had grasped the nettle.

“But if anyone Googled his name it became difficult for him to get employment because of his convictions.

“When he built up a home with the help of an MP he found himself earning less than his outgoings and he committed this latest burglary because he was short of money.”
